 સંવેદનશીલ શાંતિલાલ

  • મોટે ભાગે બાલ્યાવસ્થા પરોપજીવી હોય છે. તેથી તે બીજાને માટે ભાર- રૂપ થઈ રહે, પરંતુ શાંતિલાલ અહીં પણ સૌ બાળકોથી અલગ તરી આવતા. કદીયે કોઈને બોજારૂપ ન થવાનો જ વિચાર અને તે અનુસાર જ વર્તણૂક રાખતા. અને હા, શાંતિલાલની સંવેદનાનું આ વર્તુળ કેવળ મનુષ્ય પૂરતું જ સીમિત નહોતું. મૂંગા-અબોલ પશુઓ પ્રત્યે પણ તેઓને આવી જ સહાનુભૂતિ રહેતી.


  • શાંતિલાલ રવિવાર કે રજાના દિવસોમાં પશુધન ચરાવવા વિશ્વામિત્રી નદીના કિનારે આવેલા ગોચરમાં જતા. પશુમાં ઘેર બે ભેંસો અને એક જોડ બળદ હતા. તેને ચરાવવા અગિયારેક વાગ્યે જમી-પરવારી સૌ મિત્રો સાથે તેઓ નીકળે. અડધો કલાકે ત્યાં પહોંચી જવાય. અહીં ગાયો-ભેંસો ચરે. તે વખતે કેટલાક બાળકો ગાય-ભેંસ પર બેસીને સવારીનો આનંદ લૂંટે. બપોરે આ પશુઓ નદીમાં પણ પડે. ત્યારે કેટલાક છોકરા તેની પર બેસીને સહેલ પણ કરે, પરંતુ શાંતિલાલ કોઈ દિવસ આ ચાળે ચડ્યા નહોતા. નદીમાં પાણી બહુ આવી ગયું હોય તોય મોટે ભાગે પૂછડું પકડીને જ સામે કિનારે જાય. પશુ પર બેસે તો ભાગ્યે જ. ગાય-ભેંસ પર બેસીને તેને ભારે મારવાના વિચારમાત્રથી તેઓ દ્રવી अठता. 'आत्मवत् सर्वभूतेषु यः पश्यति स पश्यति...' अनुसार ४१-प्राशी- માત્રને તેઓ પોતાપણાની દ્રષ્ટિથી જ જોતા. પશુઓને ચરાવવા જાય ત્યારે શાંતિલાલ વાંચવાની ચોપડીઓ સાથે લઈને નીકળતા. ઢોર ચરતાં હોય ત્યારે તેઓ ઝાડના છાંયે બેસી વાંચ્યા કરે.

  • પશુધન ચરાવવાની સાથે સાથે શાંતિલાલને ક્યારેક ખેતરમાં પણ જવાનું થતું. ઈટોલા બાજુ આશરે ૨૫-૩૦ વીઘાં જમીનનું મોતીકાકાનું ખેતર હતું. તેમાં કરબડી ફેરવવાની હોય ત્યારે શાંતિલાલ કરબડી પર બેસવા માટે જતા.
